The 2021 AGT Series continued it’s season at the place where the idea first hatched to run the portfolio of events! One of the many benefits of the AGT Series is to play courses where everyday amateurs simply do not have access to and one of those places is Elgin Country Club in the western suburbs of Chicago. At first glance of the scorecard many players think the 6300 yard course might play easy but they quickly learn that’s not the case with lightning quick greens, elevation drops and false fronts make this a truly great venue.
In the Gross division, William Peel and Jared Steger set the tone, each birding the opening hole! Both players shot carded a 1 under on the front, but alternating their birdies to shoot 3 under combined. Cole Taylor and Matt Hussong matched their score through 9 and it was setup to be a great afternoon between the two teams. The teams pressed on and was tied at 5 under as both teams approached the 16th hole, which was the turning point in the match. The 405 par 4 is one of the most difficult on the course with an uphill approach shot to a tiered green with a false front. Proper distance control is a must. As the teams left the green, it was 2 shot swing with Peel & Steger pouring in a birdie, while Taylor & Hussong posting a bogey. Both teams would par out and with that Peel & Steger earned a 2 shot victory, shooting 6 under 66 and grabbed their spots at Big Cedar Lodge!
In the Net division, 18 holes were not enough to determine a winner and a sudden death playoff was needed. A net eagle pushed the father son team of Rick and John Burton to 7 under and with a par, net birdie on 18 they finished at 8 under. The team of George Tudor and Rob Maguire also played well down the stretch, with 5 birdies in the final 6 holes, capped off with a par, net birdie on 18 to force a playoff. Both teams put pars on the board on the first playoff hole and headed to the challenging second hole. Although short in distance, a large uphill second shot to a back pin awaits the players. Team Tudor & Maguire endured the playoff, rolling in a par putt to win the playoff and punch their tickets to Big Cedar!
In the Gross Skins game, 3 skins split the skins pool, with each skin worth $450:
-
Cole Taylor - Birdie on #3
-
William Peel - Birdie on #5
-
George Tudor- Birdie on #14
In the Swag Golf Putting Contest, the players had a blast taking turns at knocking down the putts. Each player had a chance to win a custom fit putter courtesy of Swag Golf. This week's winner was Paul Ihn
